Character Information

Name: Nanako Dojima
Canon: Persona 4 (Golden)
Canon Point: After the True Ending of the game but before the epilogue. Basically around the time when her "big brother" departs Inaba on the train to return home.
Age: 6
History: Nanako's Persona Wiki

Personality: Nanako is one of the youngest characters in Persona 4 and a lot of interactions with her in the game reflect this. When Souji arrives at the beginning, Nanako is shy around him and hesitant to engage with him much but she warms up to him quickly, even to the point of thinking of him as her "big brother". She loves her father deeply as well, but things in the Dojima household are complicated by the tragic past of her mother having been killed in a hit and run when Nanako was very little and the person responsible having never been found. While her father drowns himself in his work to cope, little Nanako grew up learning how to fend for herself and take care of the household as well we herself and her father, instilling in her both a responsible and nurturing personality.

Her relationship with her father is showed as strained throughout the game because his absence hurts deeply when he chooses work over being home with her but she also understands his job is important and he helps people. She is shown as disappointed and saddened by the situation several times in the game, even going so far as to doubt the fact that he loves her (or loved her mother) at all in the lowest points. As a child, she has a hard time understanding his pain and why it made her lose her father in a way as well. Through interactions in the game, this gets straightened out eventually, especially after Nanako is kidnapped and nearly dies because of the mysterious crimes happening in Inaba. Having nearly lost her as well is a turning point in her relationship with her father and he is shown as being more present and attentive and trying to understand her as well in the time following her recovery.

Nanako takes care of much of the household chores and cooking and even grocery shopping for the Dojima household, despite her young age. She's very responsible about doing so, and it's later revealed that her thinking behind it is along the lines of "when she does the dishes, it makes the plates clean for the good food they can put on it, and that makes the people eating around the table happy and smile" so she doesn't mind the chores that would normally be too much for a little girl to handle because it all ties into the desire she has to make the people around her happy. She gets very upset anytime she thinks her father and cousin are fighting and tries to stop them from doing so, even if she doesn't understand the reasons that cause the occasional tensions that arise between them.

Nanako is cheerful and friendly and easy-going the more she warms up to a person. She is delighted by simple things and loves just spending time with her friends and family. It doesn't take much to make her smile - she loves when her father or cousin take her to the local Junes store and one of her favorite things to do is go gardening with Souji and harvesting the vegetables they grew together. She's very diligent and determined and puts a lot of effort into everything she does, whether it is her chores or her schoolwork. She loves spending her evenings watching tv and is especially entertained by quiz shows. Anytime the older kids include her in their adventures makes her happy and she loves when everyone comes to visit.

Abilities: None (unless being adorable counts as a super power)
Strengths: Nurturing. Inquisitive. Empathetic. Cheerful. Responsible. Inspires hope. Loving. Innocent. Obedient. Friendly. Trusting.
Weaknesses: Naive. Inexperienced. This and her age will play a lot into many of her weaknesses in general, just because there are things that will come into play simply because of being a young child. Easily frightened. Sometimes not being able to understand adult things or concepts. A lack of depth in her understanding of the world in general. Or in people as well, without some serious working through the why of something. She also defaults to believing people are inherently good in her naivete and so wouldn't always see through deception and ill-intent. Shy around strangers.

God/Shinki: God

Why?: Ultimately this choice came down to the fact that her memories are so important to her, and I'd really prefer to keep them to play with, rather than going the Shinki route with her. Also, I thought it would be a fun avenue to take to try something different, having a child god who wants to help people and make them happy (and also really just wants her shinki to play with her and be happy too).

Top 3 Choices: Top Choice: Nanshe (this one hit closest to the relevance I was looking for to mesh with what we see of Nanako in personality, hitting both the connection to the Justice Arcana she is represented by as well as connections to some of the things that would affect her strongly, such as "she nurtured orphans, provided for widows, gave advice to those in debt, and took in refugees from war-torn areas".

Other goddesses I looked at were: Demeter, Hathor and Áine.

I'd also be open to a mod choice outside of these, if someone can think of something more relevant. I was basically looking for pings along a certain set of criteria that fit with what we see of her in canon: Justice Arcana, relevant link to orphans or a child deity, mothering or nurturing personality as she takes care of her family, I also glanced at spring and harvest deities because she loves gardening with her family. As a mythology nut, I was kind of hopping all over the place.

God Type: As some of the things listed above in what I was looking for her, in part this will depend on what god she is there representing since I'd like to play along those lines. But at heart, Nanako has a very mothering personality. I see her taking on the more nurturing and protective aspect. She would answer prayers for people she could make smile or laugh again, especially drawn to those that were sad or upset or struggling. She's also pretty energetic and curious so things that might draw her attention do have a capacity to draw from outside that range as well. Not sure yet how I might have her manage the fighting ayakashi part (this may depend on if she gets Shinki) but it might also be pretty fun to play with doing this in a child-like way from what she's influenced by around her in game.

Power: Angel Physiology, namely the Spiritual Angel section of it, because the things that pinged me for this power seemed to fall under there. All of the Justice Arcana cards in P4 are angels and this is especially relevant to Nanako because when she's taken inside the TV, her landscape manifests as "Heaven" because she wants to see her mother again. As a child, it could fit with her own perception of a being who comes to answer prayers and protect people. Also since she is a child, I wanted something that she could use on instinct or as a reactive ability because she's not a trained fighter by any stretch of the imagination. Even with this, I expect it to be a pretty wide learning curve in understanding what she can do and learning how to use what abilities she's been given. I hope in time it will counter the handicap she has by being young and not a fighter and still allow her to make a difference and hold her own when she's in danger - but again, it's something I want her to work towards and discover through the experiences she has.

The aspects of Angel Physiology that intrigued me were the Empathy and the Divine Element Manipulation portions of it. I'm intrigued by her powers being limited by the extent of her own perception and understanding as well, because of her youth and inexperience. Some parts of it just wouldn't even occur to her as an ability whereas the more visible manifestation as an angel would come more naturally since that's what she thinks of in terms of 'angel'. The tiny wings and halo and helping to answer prayers of people in need of help, however she can as a deity.
